No, that literally is true. When people from the US started making dictionaries (as in Webster), they were trying to compile words and decided that simpler spellings would be a good idea. Hence “plow” instead of “plough”. English from the United States is actually simplified English.

Hey fun fact right here. While that’s true, it’s not the only reason. American English spellings were simplified because when the printing press was first invented, publishers charged by the letter. In turn, the writers tried to conserve money by removing letters deemed unnecessary in certain words. This is also why words like “color” are spelled “colour” in Great Britain. America took out the u to save money.
